When Gartner published their 4th annual survey of the CIO Agenda for their Executive Programmes division an interesting result emerged. This a significant survey since the 1,526 CIOs who responded to this year's survey represent more than $138 billion in corporate and public sector IT spending.

The surprising result is that for all 4 years "Improving Business Processes" has been ranked as the most important item. Even more significantly, in January 2009 the items ranked 2nd and 3rd were:

* Reducing Enterprise Costs
* Increasing Enterprise Workforce Efficiency

Both items are really closely linked with Business Process Improvement. As they highlight, the current economic climate presents both a challenge and an opportunity:

* Challenge: Cut costs
* Opportunity: Change the company's cost structure

Those who just respond to the challenge are likely to emerge weakened and, perhaps, emaciated by the experience. Those who seize the opportunity could emerge leaner, meaner and ready to reap the rewards of the economic upturn.
